Our Story
Our Journey to Nature and Farmers
Seeds and Hands began with something we noticed during our travels through the spice-growing regions of Kerala. The spices we tasted at the source, freshly harvested cardamom, pepper, and cinnamon straight from the farm, were nothing like what we found in stores back home. They were alive. Aromatic, full of character, with a freshness and purity that stayed with us long after we left.
Back home, we kept asking the same question: why wasn't this quality more easily available to people?
That question became Seeds and Hands in 2017. We started small, in the Western Ghats, with a simple focus: source real spices, sell them honestly, and build a direct link between the people who grow them and the people who cook with them. Over time, that grew into something larger. We expanded into single-origin teas, raw honey, and handcrafted gift boxes, each held to the same standard as our spices. Not to grow a product range, but because we found producers who deserved the same kind of honest partnership.
Where We Source From
Most of our spices, cardamom, black pepper, cinnamon, turmeric and more come from the highlands of Wayanad, Kerala. Our cloves and select spices come from the estates of Idukki. Both sit deep in Kerala's Western Ghats, where altitude, forest shade, consistent rainfall and generations of farming knowledge produce spices with an aroma and quality that flat-land, high-volume farming simply cannot replicate.
How We Choose Our Farmers
Every spice in our catalogue starts with a conversation. Before we source from any farmer, we sit with them and understand their cultivation process, how they manage their land, what inputs they use, and how they approach pest control. This interaction alone tells us a great deal.
We make our intention clear from the start: we are only looking for spices that are low-pesticide or zero-pesticide. If a farmer is willing to commit to that standard consistently, we take a sample of their produce for independent lab testing to measure pesticide residue levels. If the results come back clean, we begin purchasing from them , and we stay with them for years.
We don't test every batch. That would be impractical and costly. Instead, we build trust. We've seen the farms, we know the farmers, we understand their methods. And during exports or when needed, we go back for testing. In all the years we've been doing this, we have never once found pesticide levels to be high in the produce of the farmers we work with.
The reason these farmers trust us is simple: we don't bargain with them. Our policy has always been that the farmer must benefit equally from this partnership. These are small-scale growers, not large commercial operations, which is precisely why they don't need to use heavy pesticides in the first place. We make sure they can earn a dignified living from their work.
What keeps us going is human trust. The trust between our farmers and us. The trust our customers place in us. That trust is what Seeds and Hands is built on.
